We have been playing venues that don’t have there own ice surface so we have ice guys that install tank ice in the venue each week. There is a compressor that is keeping the ice cool but since this isn’t a permanent feature in the building it has a lot more of a chance to have an issue and malfunction and we’d be screwed if it just turned off and we were left with a puddle where the ice had once been. So because of this there is an ice watcher every night that must check every two hours that the compressor was still running and the ice isn’t wet. Anyone can volunteer and Adrienne and I decided to try it out on Saturday night. We tag teamed this job because we were too scared to stay at the rink ourselves. It actually turned out to be a really fun night. It was like a slumber party……only in a freezing cold rink.
We skated and I haven’t skated since Thanksgiving which is both crazy and horrible! It was wicked fun. Jarrod stayed and skated for a little with us too. I impressed myself with doing all my jumps. A perk to doing ice watch is being able to use the washer and dryer as you please. I got to do two loads and even did a third to watch my jacket and robe. The dryers were slow so it literally took all night but regardless it was awesome to get it done and have everything clean for once. At one point I heard this squeaking noise and started yelling for Adrienne. We seeked out the noise and were brought to the barrel props used in the pirate number. Someone on crew had neglected to turn them off probably just to scare us.
This building is pretty ghetto and doesn’t have any rooms that we could use for our make up and costume room so instead we have cubicle-like walls to create rooms. If you can imagine this meant these rooms were frigid and this is where we had the pleasure of sleeping. It actually was totally fine though because we each had a space heater we could use and I actually got so overheated I turned mine off. We created beds on the floor with exercise mats and comforters and pillows we may have borrowed from the hotel and it was pretty comfy.
We watched Music and Lyrics which had me laughing my head off. I think I liked it so much just because of the 80’s style music video for Pop’s single “Pop goes my heart.” This morning I couldn’t stop singing it and it was especially funny in my over-tired state. I probably got three and a half hours of sleep but surprisingly felt very much awake all day today. It wasn’t too bad at all. I think the worse part was going to the bathroom which was on the other side where there weren’t as many lights on. I would run all the way there and back.
