Making Friends with Sheep on the Ring of Beara

Today I drove the Ring of Beara with Meredith. This is a scenic drive that goes around the Beara Peninsula. She rented a car for the whole week and invited me to tag along with her. She was here earlier in the year and had drove the Ring of Kerry which is probably very similar. Kerry is must more well know and she said there was way more people stopped along the road and even big tour buses so it was nice doing the less traveled one.

It ended up raining about half way in and not letting up which is odd for Ireland. Usually I feel like it only rains for like an hour tops and then clears and is beautiful out. Today this was not the case though. The roads was super narrow esp. in certain parts were it was one car wide so if a car was coming from the other direction you had to figure out how to squeeze by each other. We didn’t have to deal with this very often though. On our way home we saw two truck heading out where we had come from and we were like good luck with that trucks.

The views were really pretty looking out off the coast and also all the fields filled with sheep and their little lambs which were adorable. I really hate how they mark them with spray paint. They all have big red and green blobs on their backs and I know it doesn’t hurt them but I still find it mean. It also makes them look not as good in pictures!

We started seeing a fog coming in and new it would be raining soon enough. When it did we were more reluctant to get out and take pictures. We stopped in a little village called Castle something and got some lunch. I had some really nice vegetable soup and bread. The rest of the drive it was raining. I really wanted to touch a sheep. We saw one on the side of the road and Mere stopped right next to him. I tried to creep out of the car and touch it but it bolted. I was shocked at how fast he moved. I then proceeded to yell at him from down the road saying, “You suck!” I attempted this same process one more time unsuccessfully. We also saw this cow. I was talking to him and he looked over at me but he wouldn’t come over near us. To get back we drove on Healy’s Pass which was built to help starvation I’m guessing because it cut across and was a more direct way to Killarney.
